Jeff why would anyone use a 2003 version? Besides from 2009 Norton re-wrote the entire program.

For around 6 weeks, the 2003 versions - and some others don't work anymore after an update of the virus definitions. No support from Symantec and, naturally no fix.

Far too many viruses get past Norton to make this worthless!

Both Symantec and McAfee build bloated performance sucking garbage. I have a LOT of experience with the corporate version of this app (SAV 8 / 9 / 10) and know that of which I speak.

I agree. I used it for years before it became bloatware and decreasing a new systems performance by as much as 20 percent. NOD32 has since blown NAV out of the water.

Ok THe Norton Antivirus definitions works with the client via offline. Right now I am working in Trincomalee, Sri Lanka where I have slow internet connectivity. Is there a way to update the server by anymeans using offline updates. It would be really helpful since we can get updates via CD or USB Disk then update that results updating the whole network. Thanks in advance.

Norton anti-virus (consumer versions) is bloated garbage. The one app on your computer that should be trying to use as little as possible resources is actually a skinned application with so many add-on modules that it takes forever to boot the computer.
the overly bitmapped interface and condescending UI animations would even make the writers of CSI Miami blush. My intelligence wants an apology.

yes there is a reason to download standalone definition updates instead of liveupdate: if you have multiple computers all using norton, and you wanna save bandwith.
i download it every month or so. good enough so far.

I have Symantec installed on a computer and last night I downloaded an app and went to run it, Windows Defender popped up and stated that it contained a keylogger. I scanned it with SAV and it detected nothing. I downloaded the open source virus scanner ClamWin and scanned the file with it and it detected the keylogger also. I have lost all of my confidence in Symantec.

How anyone can rate an antivirus definition update is completely beyond me. You either have one that works & updates automatically, or you don't have any av at all (not unheard of). To get it here is even lamer. I use symantec av corp 10-at present-it can update daily, or weekly. This has nothing to do with the fw which I wouldn't install ever again. This is kinda like people who are starving rating their last meal

NAV is great for antivirus and their prompt definitions updates. I haven't tested 2004 or 2005 yet because I uninstalled 2004--it wouldn't shut-up about demanding that I manually scan a file, even if I clicked cancel/abort...it kept popping up.
Anyways, if you have NAV 2003 or previous, you can get a fresh year of freeupdates 100% legally and I'll tell you how. First you need to uninstall NAV, then locate the file 'Catalog.LiveSubscribe' and delete it. In Windows 2000/XP this file is located in 'C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication DataSymantecLiveSubscribe'. 'Application data' is a hidden folder in 2000/XP, so if you can't get to it by pasting that location into Explorer, browse to the folder 'C:Documents and SettingsAll Users' and click on tools>folder options>view tab, and put the radio button beside 'show hidden files and folders' and hit OK. Now browse to the location I showed and delete that file. Reinstall NAV and you've got a fresh year of updates for free.
I don't know the location of 'Catalog.LiveSubscribe' in 98/ME, so you'll have to use the search feature to find it.
There is a way to do this without uninstalling, but it requires modifying or replacing the 'Catalog.LiveSubscribe' file which would be in violation of Symantec's EULA, so I will not post this information.

The definitions are fine, but I installed the Norton Internet Security suite and was surprised that the only useful part of the entire thing was the antivirus program. The firewall offered virtually no real user control, and LiveUpdate essentially choked off all computer operations while it downloaded new definitions in the background. Even my keyboard would lose focus. So after a few days I uninstalled, only LiveUpdate did not, continuing on bootup, even though it had nothing to update. Ten years ago Norton software took over your computer once installed; today it's no different.

The intelligent updater virus definitions are updated more regularly than the liveupdate definitions. this manual download is for people who want the very latest norton protection.
as for filesize complaints, the engine is also constantly under revision. downloading only the definitions after more than a couple of weeks will not provide the best level of protection, as the engine will become dated. liveupdate definitions may be the ticket for dial-up users, as they only include the engine when there's been an update to it.

Not so, virus definitions do not always update correctly. These help alot in some cases, especially in the offline situations.

haha... somehow on 3/4 i can get the definitons for 4/4... a full month in advance! now thats what i call service. ;)

Some improvements needed for antivirus update download:
1. Smaller file size. Karspersky update smaller.
2. Add option to download the complete update: antivirus data and the engine. this useful for updating many computer where only dialup connection is available. so we just download one big files, and use to update offline. after that if need to update live, we just need to download small update. compared to now. the update is too heavy for dialup user.

Horrible. Yesterday we spent $59.99 and bought SystemWorks 2004, which includes NAV 2004. After it 'installed' everything worked except, you got it, NAV 2004. This even after we activated the gem. Various windows then popped up saying that we had tampered with the license. The antivirus app refused to do anything, except provide a popup that indicated an internal error, 3029,19. The uninstall button below the pink padlock was non-functioning. When we tried to uninstall thru the Symantec-recommended ADD/REMOVE, it wouldn't uninstall, giving an error message: System memory is running very low -- that with 768 M ram with 88% resources free. The following day, after waiting 90 minutes on hold to tech support, we were advised that NAV spread itself out across the entire harddrive and could not reliably be uninstalled using ADD/REMOVE. The tech guy offered elinks to 22 pages of manual uninstall instructions and directed us to four uninstall subroutines, one from MS, which had to be downloaded. Under his telephone direction, we spent another two hours using these devices trying to get the damn NAV program out. After implementing his advice, the entire system refused to run in anything but safe mode. After another two hours with MS support in New Delli, we restored the booting. Guess what? All that NAV stuff is still there, occupying more than a dozen places! And the clincher? Symantec had the balls to charge for the help. Anybody have success with anything else? Panda? Kaspersky?

NAV has a nice interface, but it's buggy as hell (Tip for the clueless: Just because YOU don't experience a bug does not mean it doesn't exist). And the new product activation requirement is off-putting as well, unless you are the mindless type. But why do people rate and review AV definitions, though? Oops, I just did, too.

May I ask what is 'Esets'? NOG?

Have a look at Esets latest NOD 32, it's a fifth of the size, faster, better virus detection, why people use this piece of junk is beyond me.

Unless there is a major virus attack Live Update is only updated on Wednesdays. I finally found a link on Symantec's website that says so.

I feel Norton is the best virus scanner, but I'm really starting to get ticked at their live update program. It rarely works anymore, and even doing a manual scan it tells me my virus definitions are up to date, yet my last update was a week ago from this update. I'm about ready to give up on it. I also dang sick of wasting my money on programs that don't work right.

Norton AV is an excellent anti-virus tool. Scans cleanly and without taking lots of resources. Does all my email without having to reconfigure the POP and SMTP server settings to localhost as many make you do.
My sole complaint about Norton AV? This download. My 'Live Update' never has current virus defs. It is always days behind. If they can update external sites, why can't they update their own tool for paying customers?

Norton is by far the best virus scanner despite the crap spread by some people. It even scans email attachments correctly, unlike many of the other virus scanners.

This is just a virus def update. Nothing else. It isn't supposed to fix anything. BTW, there is a new version of LiveUpdate on Symantec's website. Don't know what it fixes. Sorry.

Please don't get me wrong, I think that Norton is the best, but lately it seems that most of my 'updates' deal with 'LiveUpdate' and not Norton AntiVirus definitions...this update is yet another 1800+ kb download that I suppose will fix something in the last 2/3 other downloads that dealt with liveUpdate.

Short and sweet. NAV 2001/2002 is by far the best AV program in the world.

Besides, it isn't even an update for thw MS platform. That def date is still 9/22. This is for MAC-9/28.

We ran McAffee latest version with latest updates at the computer store and it found a virus.. Notice I said 1 virus. Anyways Mcaffee couldn't clean it I said to my boss at the time let me put NAV on it and I bet you it will clean it. It not only cleaned it but also found 6 other viruses that Mcaffee did not find and a couple of Trojans. NAV has been the preferred and only antivirus in use there now.

I think Nav is not a good antivirus program for office use (i don't prefer for home use also)Windows always crashed because of this program. I prefer avp and cheyenne

NAV is the best...in my experience it is far better than Mcafee with an older mcafee that i used to use along time ago i had a virus sittin on my computer for along while and it never picked it up till one of my friends had nav and i was sendin him a file and it was infected with the virus and i didnt know it...he was liek what the hell are u sending me a virus for and i didnt know i had one till then so that day i went out and got NAV and ive stuck with it ever since! its the best and im stickin to it.

I think NAV is for the advanced user only. It is because from my experience, it can make some changes to your system and it must be configured properly before you get confused with this product. I've been used AVP too.It's true that this product didn't eat soooo much resource but is it give you some proof that it will detect all virus and trojans? And now, I'm using MCAfee...and I'm satisfied..I don't care if this product eat so much resource because I had 500MHz processor with 128MB RAM. Although all virus scanner MUST 'eat' some system resource to scanning virus in background, if they not...you know what will happen...

I've tested McAfee, AVP & last Norton. McAfee eats a lot of resources, Norton is also eating too much resources, AVP is the best in this area.

could detect it ,the cleaner and mcafee proved inefective.

NAV is far superior to McAffee. It finds many virii and trojans than Mcafee can't detect. It also uses far less resources. Just run the system configuration utility and see what Mcafee scatters all over your registry.
Norton is clean, fast, and more dependable... IMHO.

NAV is good, but McAffee is better. The scan engines, McAffee.Com, and the McAffee labs where they research are superior to Symantec's.
